About Us - Bawan Buti

“Bawan buti”is an ancient art of Bihar. Bawan buti as the name suggests is a combination of 52 butis( Motifs) in which 8 auspicious Buddhist symbols are intricately woven on the Saris and Fabric.

The fabric is used for bedcovers, curtains and upholstery.

These beautifully patterned handmade curtains once adorned the Rastrapati Bhawan during the time of
Dr Rajendra Prasad.

Manners

It is said that in earlier times 52 motifs (so the name Bavaan Buti) were woven in a Saree and gifted to daughter at the time of her marriage among Buddhist follower families in Bihar. The Bavaan Buti sarees and dress materials denoted nobility in ancient times.

Extra Weft

Extra weft is a fascinating display of hand skill, where each motif is created by inserting an extra weft (bana) to the standard weft that holds the warp (tana) together. There are some very fine and exquisite motifs that emerge out of this magical craft and embellish hand woven fabrics.
